2020 ATP BMW Open fantasy tennis: Pella stuns Khachanov in 48-minute demolition job

A 48-minute blitz of a seed was the most-watched result of the day at the 2020 ATP BMW Open fantasy tennis tournament, with Argentinian Guido Pella completely dismantling the usually solid Karen Khachanov. The unseeded Pella showed no mercy as he moved through to the second round with a 6-1 6-0 win over the top 20 Russian.

The other unseeded player to take down a seed was Norway’s Casper Ruud getting up over eighth seed Canadian, Milos Raonic. In a come-from-behind win, Ruud got the chocolates 3-6 6-4 6-4 to advance through to the Round of 16 and face Great Britain’s Andy Murray. The returning Grand Slam winner skipped past German Dustin Brown despite the crowd rooting for the qualifier, as Murray won 6-4 6-2.

A number of other one-sided results occurred across the day with fellow Brit Kyle Edmund winning 6-0 6-3 over Viktor Troicki, while Troicki’s Serbian compatriot Miomir Kecmanovic got one back on the home crowd with a win over German qualifier, Mischa Zverev, 6-3 6-1. The sole German through to the next round of the day one matches was Jan-Lennard Struff who made light work of young Frenchman Ugo Humbert 6-3 6-0, while Philipp Kohlschreiber bowed out in three sets at the hands of a Frenchman in Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 6-2 1-6 7-5.

From the seeded perspective, fifth seed Andrey Rublev and seventh seed Cristian Garin both moved through to the Round of 16 win respective straight sets wins over Juan Ignacio Londero and Denis Istomin respectively. The three remaining matches from Round 1 saw United States’ John Isner defeat Latvian qualifier Ernests Gulbis in three sets, while Benoit Paire and Felix Auger-Aliassime both won through in straight sets with wins over Brandon Nakashima and Marton Fucsovics respectively.

Tomorrow’s action sees the top four seeds enter the draw with Alexander Zverev taking on Isner in front of the German’s home crowd, while Matteo Berrettini, Roberto Bautista Agut and Diego Schwartzman all take to the court for the first time in the tournament.
