WTA Tour wrap: Teenage stars take the cake

FOUR of the eight quarter finalists at the 2021 MUSC Health Women’s Open have been decided after four matches were played out on the Charleston clay. Third seed Shelby Rogers was the only seeded player through to the quarter finals, defeating American Claire Liu in straight sets, 6-2 6-2. The second highest ranked remaining player in the draw cruised through the final eight in 68 minutes.

The results were not as positive for the sixth and seventh seeds. Sixth seed Australian Ajla Tomljanovic went down to rising Danish star Clara Tauson, with the 18-year-old winning 6-1 6-4 in 96 minutes of play. Lauren Davis was the other casualty from a seeded perspective, going down in the longest encounter of day three, as Montenegro’s Danka Kovinic won in two hours and eight minutes, eventually triumphing in three sets, 6-1 1-6 6-3.

In the other match on the day, Japan’s Nao Hibino won in straight sets over another American in Francesca Di Lorenzo, making it three losses from four competitors at the clay court tournament, 6-4 6-3.

In tomorrow’s action, Cristina McHale takes on teenage Colombian Maria Camila Osorio Serano and Emma Navarro takes on another teenage talent in Czech Republic’s Linda Fruhvirtova. Top seed Tunisian Ons Jabeur will lock horns with Alycia Parks, while eighth seed Madison Brengle going head-to-head with Astra Sharma.
