AUSTRALIA and Great Britain have both won a final against the respective nation in Thailand, with Aussie Hayden Jones and Brit Mika Stojsavljevic winning the boys and girls singles respectively. Jones defeated British opponent Benjamin Gusic Wan in three sets, while Stojsavljevic got one back for the Brits by defeating talented Aussie Alana Subasic in the decider.

Jones went into the boys’ singles as top seed and lived up to expectations, only dropping one set en route to the final. Once he got there though, he ran into an in-form Gusic Wan full of confidence and the fourth seed started strongly by winning the first set.

Luckily for Jones, he regrouped after the opening set to put the foot down and storm away, winning 6-1 6-2 in the final two sets to claim the J200 title in Nonthaburi. It marked his second J200 title after winning in Chuncheon last year, while he has also upstaged former top 10 talent Tomasz Berkieta this year.

In the girls’ Stojsavljevic, who only turned 15 in December, was also the number one seed. The British talent never looked like losing throughout the tournament dropping 15 games combined in her first four matches – less than four per match – and looked on her way to do that against Subasic.

A Brisbane J100 winner, Subasic would have looked for answers after she was bagelled in the first set by the world number 34, and she somewhat found them. The second set was a nail-biter, going down to the wire before eventually the higher ranked player got up, winning 7-5.

Currently ranked 169th in the world, Subasic is expected to rise well after her finals appearance, and the 16 year-old has now made three consecutive finals, wining 12 of her past 14 matches. Though she did not come away with the title on this occasion, the 16-year-old will be proud of another deep run in a tournament.

For Stojsaljevic, the win marked her first title of 2024, to go with her two J100 trophies in the United Kingdon at Loughborough and Glasgow last year. The British 15-year-old looked the goods at the Australian Open earlier this year but ran into the red-hot second seed, Sara Saito and bowed out in the third round.
